A place where experiments are done is a 実験室（じっけんしつ） [ji'kken-shee-tsu] and a place of research and study is a 研究室（けんきゅうしつ）[ken-kyuu-shee-tsu] and most university professors would use the latter form because they are doing pen-and-paper research more often than lab-based experiments.
